Dani Alves’ ex-wife shares selfie on Instagram just moments after former Barcelona full-back was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail… after being found guilty of rape for attack in a Spanish nightclub bathroom

Dani Alves’ ex-wife has shared a selfie onto social media just moments after the former Barcelona full-back was sentenced to four years and six months in jail.

On Thursday, the former Brazil international was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of an upscale Barcelona nightclub in the early hours of December 31, 2022.

The 40-year-old father-of-two had been held on remand at Brians 2 Prison near the Catalan capital since his arrest in January last year and now faces his first night behind bars as a convicted sex offender.

Despite the tragic news for the ex-Barca star, his former wife Joana Sanz has taken the opportunity to share a selfie with followers on her Instagram.

Just moments after Alves’ sentencing, Sanz took to social media to share a picture of herself before also posting a picture which appeared to show she was out for coffee.

Alves protested his innocence on February 7 after taking the stand on the last day of his three-day trial at Barcelona’s Audiencia Provincial court.

He admitted to having sex in a toilet at upmarket Barcelona nightclub Sutton in the early hours of December 31, 2022 with his 23-year-old female accuser, but insisted it was consensual.

The woman he was today found guilty of raping confirmed Alves had forced himself on her when she gave her evidence in court behind her screen.

A friend who was with her the night of the rape broke down in tears as she recalled how the victim was ‘crying uncontrollably’ after leaving the small bathroom where the incident occured.

State prosecutors had demanded a nine year prison sentence if Alves was convicted and a private prosecutor acting for the victim demanded a 12-year jail term at his trial.

Back in June 2023, Alves admitted to cheating on his wife, however, maintained that he was innocent.

Speaking to La Vanguardia from prison last summer, Alves apologised to his former partner. ‘The only person I have to apologise to is my wife, Joana Sanz,’ he said.

‘The woman I married eight years ago, to whom I am still married, and with whom I hope to continue living all my life.

In a letter, Sanz wrote ‘it will take years to erase from my memory his way of looking at me’

‘I have already apologised to her personally here in prison, but I must do it publicly, because the story is public, the offence is public and she deserves a public apology.

‘These have been, are being and will be very hard days for her. I thank her for everything she is doing for me. Her role is not easy. I love her and during this time in prison I have thought a lot about our marriage.

‘I am certain that I was not wrong to choose Joana as my wife. Although perhaps she did make a mistake with me.’

His wife appeared to confirm she had split from Alves in a social media post.

In a handwritten letter, she said ‘it will take years to erase from my memory his way of looking at me’ and ‘here is a strong woman moving on to the next stage of her life.’

Alves, who became the oldest player to represent Brazil at the World Cup in December 2022 in Qatar, was ordered to stand trial last November.

Initially it was reported he had been accused of putting his hands down a woman’s underwear inside a toilet in the VIP area of Sutton nightclub before it emerged his victim was saying she had been raped.

He was sacked by Mexican side UNAM Pumas following his arrest in Barcelona at the start of last year after he flew back to the Catalan capital to attend his mother-in-law’s funeral.

He made repeated bail requests after being remanded in jail but they were all turned down, with judges saying his victim’s version of events was coherent and pointing out Alves had changed his story several times as the evidence authorities against him emerged.

Alves claimed before his arrest he had never met his female accuser but ended up backtracking after being held.
