Dead body is found with burn marks at a football pitch as police launch investigation

Police have launched an investigation after a body was found burned on a football football pitch this morning.

Burned human remains were discovered on the pitch in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, at around 9am this morning.

Police officers have sealed off the area and a white tent has been erected on a football pitch at the scene.

Officers remain at the scene of the death in the Muirhouse area of the town.

It is understood the area is known locally as the ‘Muirhead pitches’.

MailOnline understands gender of the person whose body was burned is currently unknown to police.

Police Scotland said the death is being treated as ‘unexplained’. It is thought that the body was set on fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Around 9am on Saturday, 24 February, 2024 a body was discovered in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell.

‘Officers are at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.’

An witness told The Scottish Sun that the young woman was ‘absolutely distraught’  after she found the body.

They said that two fire engines rushed to the scene followed by two police cars and that the body initially looked like an ‘animal carcass’ from their window.

The Scottish Sun reported that the body was found near boulders which marked the outline of the football pitch.
