Four-month-old baby dies after horror crash between van and taxi which saw several people rushed to hospital

A four-month-old baby boy has died after a horrific crash between a van and a taxi which saw several people rushed to hospital.

Shocking images show the aftermath of the crash between a Vauxhall Vivaro van and a Toyota Auris which occurred on the A1620 near Rodley in Leeds just before 5pm on Monday. 

The young baby boy was rushed to hospital and left fighting for his life but tragically passed away on Wednesday. 

Two women in the Toyota and a man from the Vivaro were also taken to hospital for treatment.

A 54-year-old man, who was driving the van, has been arrested by police on dangerous driving offences.

The Vivaro was travelling northbound and collided head-on with the Toyota which was going in the opposite direction.

Emergency services, including fire, police and an air ambulance, rushed to the scene after the crash caused a huge fireball in the middle of the busy road.

The road was immediately closed by highway workers whilst the incident was dealt with. 

The 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and later bailed by police. 

At the time of the crash, thick black smoke was spotted by nearby local residents.

Danielle Dumpling, 41, was with son Dex, 14, told The Yorkshire Evening Post: ‘We heard an explosion and the smoke billowed up.

‘I just hope whoever was involved is ok, it really didn’t look good at all.’

Another local said: ‘My heart goes out to this boy’s family.

‘I live near here and bad driving and busting red lights is a daily occurrence. When will you patrol as we never see police patrolling.’

West Yorkshire Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses to the incident. 

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision on Horsforth New Road near Rodley.

‘Roads policing officers would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision between a Vauxhall Vivaro van and a Toyota Auris on the A6120 Ring Road between Calverley and Rodley at about 4.55pm on Monday, February 12.

‘It took place after the Vivaro, which was travelling northbound, was in a head on collision with the Toyota travelling in the opposite direction. A full road closure was put in place at the location while emergency services managed the incident.’
