I made my pregnant friend cry by criticising her baby name – she says I’ve ‘ruined’ it, but she wanted to call her child after a household item

A woman has revealed she made her pregnant friend cry after criticising the name she chose for her unborn child.

Taking to Reddit, the anonymous user, from the US, admitted she can be ‘quite judgemental’ when it came to the names of other people’s children, but asked if she was being unreasonable after discovering her friend was planning on calling her unborn baby ‘Coaster’.

The anonymous poster’s friend chose the gender-neutral moniker because she believed it was ‘super cool and different, and sounds like a surfer name’.

But after learning that coaster was a synonym for beer mat, the pregnant woman was left in tears, and blamed her friend for ‘ruining the name for her’.

Taking to Subreddit NameNerdCircleJerk, which sees users share instances of people choosing unconventional names for their children, she explained: ‘My friend is expecting her third child, and they aren’t finding out the sex until birth.

‘I was kind of expecting her to come out with something that’s not too common, but not weird. Her family are big surfer hippie people, and their first two kids have uncommon but recognisable nature names.’

‘We met up with them yesterday, and I was chatting to her about pregnancy, parenting etc, and eventually I asked her if she had a name for her third kid. She said yes.

‘She then proceeded to tell me that she’s ‘so happy with the name, nobody else has a name like that, and it’s super cool and different, and sounds like a surfer name.’

‘Hearing this, I was sort of internally bracing myself for what was to come, but I just had to ask what the name was.

‘It’s Coaster.’

When the person noted the association, they revealed their friend appeared to have no idea what a coaster was, and had to search for the item on Google to find out.

The drama seemingly continued, after the Redditor concerned said they received a text from their friend’s partner, which stated that they had made her cry ‘because she loved the name and you ruined it for her.’

She responded to this by saying that, in her opinion, it was better that she knew what a coaster is before the child was born, as she felt it inevitable that someone would make the association and ridicule her at a later date.

That was not the end of the matter though, as the original post was edited with an update to say that the pair had since reconciled and put aside their differences.

They said their friend apologised for being defensive about the situation and would probably not be naming their child Coaster after all.

She also explained to her friend that she did not know what a coaster was because their family simply used napkins as coasters at home instead.

Responding to the comments, other users sided with the stance of the original poster, saying they would have reacted in similar fashion.

One user wrote: ‘I don’t think I could have come up with a different response in the moment tbh! I would have been stunned. You have done the child a favour’.

A second added: ‘Hopefully, OP did the kid a favour. Honestly, I’m more worried that the friend didn’t know what a coaster was.’

Another simply queried: ‘Has she ever been to literally anyone else’s house though?’

A further Reddit user remarked: ‘She doesn’t respect wood’.
