I travelled across Europe after saving all the tips from my waitressing job – it was worth working 12-hour days

A waitress worked tirelessly for three months to fund a European tour – which was funded solely on her tips.

Hannah Davis, 22, from Lexington Park, Maryland, saved nearly $4,000 in tips and spent all of it on a solo vacation around Europe.

The travel enthusiast worked the longest shifts possible, to make her dream a reality – and thanks to her hard work, she managed to visit six countries in Europe.

She began her European tour in Greece, before heading to Austria, Italy, Malta, Cyprus and finally, Spain

To keep all of her tips tucked away, Hannah kept them all in a glass jar, sometimes adding hundreds of dollars worth of tips at a time.

Then, after the jar filled up, Hannah took her trusty hammer to the container and smashed her way through to the cash.

Hannah said: ‘It took me three months of saving to make the trip possible. I worked full-time and saved almost everything I made for the vacation.

‘I worked 12-hour shifts from Wednesday to Sundays for the entirety of the summer, and I made sure that I wasn’t spending money on anything besides necessities.’

Hannah had always wanted to visit Europe and she decided that it was time to bite the bullet and put everything into making her dream turn into reality.

Over the next few months, the waitress spent hours on end working at her seafood restaurant, sacrificing many nights out with her friends.

To her surprise, she had stashed over $3,800 from her hard work which easily covered her flights to and from Europe, which cost $750 in total.

She was ecstatic about her trip and could not wait to get started – and she had around $3,000 left to spend – just from tips alone.

During her trip, Hannah managed to keep to a strict budget, by staying in cheap hostels, cooking her own food and sticking to buses instead of trains.

However, despite keeping to a tight budget, Hannah had buckets of fun on her vacation, with plenty of sightseeing, sunbathing and new friends.

Hannah’s TikToks about the ‘tip jar’ and her European tour gathered millions of views and she aims to show people that you do not have to be rich to travel the world.

Now, she has already started saving for another trip around Europe with a brand new tip jar.

She said: ‘I had been planning on travelling post-college graduation for quite some time but it wasn’t until I started saving, that I realised I needed to be able to visualise my progress.

‘I decided to find a piggy bank that was see-through, but completely unopenable so that I wouldn’t be able to take any money out. It was a way to keep me on track.

‘I made sure that I wasn’t spending money on anything besides necessities. I stopped going out to eat with friends, wouldn’t spend money at the bars, and limited all shopping unless I absolutely needed something.

‘Every single moment of my trip is cherished, I spent my whole life dreaming of travelling and to be able to work towards this dream, and succeed, was so special to me. I had the time of my life, and I hope to go on another big trip as soon as possible.

‘The trip was spent sightseeing, chasing the sunshine and sea, making connections with people from all over the world, and having experiences that have changed my life. It was absolutely worth all of the work.

‘This trip was done on a budget, I stayed in hostels, took buses rather than flying, cooked meals in hostels at times, and overall made it as budget friendly as I could.

‘I used to think travelling, especially big trips like mine, was an impossible dream, and that it was only possible for rich people. While money is necessary for big trips like this, it is entirely possible for anyone to do it if they work towards their dreams.’
