Lorraine Kelly hits back at work-shy criticism after viral account tracking her absences revealed she hasn’t presented 30% of her breakfast shows this year

Lorraine Kelly has spoken out for the first time after she discovered a Twitter account criticising her work ethic.

Called Where Is Lorraine?, with the handle @LorraineKWatch, the account updates followers on whether or not the Scottish star has hosted the show that day.

Viewers were left baffled earlier this week, as they found the TV host was missing from her own show, but then later appeared on This Morning

While Ranvir Singh has covered Lorraine’s role on her self-titled show this week, the 64-year-old Scotswoman has now set the record straight as she addressed the Twitter account committed to tracking her days off.

Speaking on Woman’s Hour on Friday with host Anita Rani, Lorraine admitted she was aware of the account, which now has over 12,000 followers, as she admitted: ‘I know, the amount of space that I occupy in people’s heads is quite bizarre.’

Insisting the account doesn’t bother her, she explained: ‘Its fine. I don’t mind, I don’t care. I probably would have cared before but I really don’t now it’s absolutely fine.’

The star went on to explain the real reason she had been missing from a number of shows lately as she is taking some time off to care for her mother who is unwell.

Lorraine continued: ‘But you should never comment on things like that if you don’t know what is going on in people’s lives but I am having to take quite a few Fridays off because my mum is really not well.

‘So I can go home now and spend some more time with her and help her a bit more than I have been able to. So that is happening just now but that will change.

‘I have been doing five days a week for 40 years so I am just taking a wee bit of time off and obviously this week is half term which is why I am able to talk to you!’

Earlier in the day, the Where Is Lorraine? account revealed Lorraine has hosted 24 episodes out of 34 this year, equivalent to 70.5 percent.

Issuing a statement in response to Lorraine’s explanation, Where Is Lorraine? wrote: ‘It feels apt to say now that of course we respect that Lorraine may need more time away to look after her mother.

‘There is, and never has been, any malice behind this account. It is all for fun and we are happy that @reallorraine seems to understand that.’

Yet not all fans were convinced by Lorraine’s explanation for her time off as they took to Twitter to voice their opinions.

One asked: ‘Her Mum’s not well but she still manages to appear on Radio 4?’

A second joked: ‘She totally cares’ while another teased: ‘Lorraine’s just showing us that we should all be advocating for a four day work week and I respect her for that’.

A third pointed out: ‘Today is Friday, she’s on the radio not spending time with her mum’.

Referring to her explanation that she is off this week due to half term, one asked: ‘But… Why do you need half term off lorraine. You are not a child’.

Another added: ‘It was going so well, she had the sympathy in the bag until she gleefully declared that it’s half term! Oh Lozza’.

Others offered words of support, as they wrote: ‘Thoughts and prayers are with Lorraine.’

Another added: ‘She’s asking you kindly to stop because her Mum is ill. Have you no compassion?’

While Lorraine has appeared on both This Morning and Woman’s Hour this week, she will also join this weeks celebrity line up on The Graham Norton Show on Friday evening.

Last July Lorraine rushed up to Scotland to be by her elderly mother’s bedside after Anne, 81, was admitted into University Hospital Monklands, in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Taking to Twitter at the time, Lorraine wrote: ‘Having spent a lot of time over the past few days with my mum in @UHMonklands hospital I’ve seen again just how kind, caring, hard working, funny and downright fabulous our NHS workers are.

‘Thank you doesn’t begin to cover it.’

While she did not go into further detail about her mum’s condition Anne was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome in February 2023, a condition that stops the kidneys functioning properly which also saw her hospitalised.

Lorraine moved to London to be close to work, but her parents and her husband Steve live in her hometown of Glasgow.
