Timothee Chalamet gushes over ‘superpower actors’ Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler as the Dune: Part Two cast lands EW digital cover ahead of film’s release

Timothee Chalamet was joined by his Dune: Part Two co-stars Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler for a digital cover feature for Entertainment Weekly, which was released on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old actor sat down for a wide-ranging interview with the media outlet, during which he praised his old and new castmates as ‘superpower actors.’

Chalamet — who recently admitted her was slightly uncomfortable during the movie’s romance scenes — marveled over their ability to strike a delicate balance between spectacle and believability.

‘They know instinctively how to exist in a movie of this size and really bring a strong presence, while also keeping the naturalism alive,’ he explained.

Chalamet stars as Paul Atreides in Dune, which was based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name.

The feature was released to much critical and commercial success in March of 2021, and it went on to win six Academy Awards.

Chalamet went on to speak about a particularly pivotal scene he worked on for Dune: Part Two, in which Atreides delivers a speech entirely in Chakobsa, a language specifically constructed for the upcoming movie.

‘Those five days on set, speaking in a language that was conceived for the films, I was just savoring those days…Even when we rehearsed that scene, we went all in,’ he recalled.

Director Denis Villeneuve, who also helmed the first Dune film, highly commended the work of the Wonka star and stated that working on the scene became unexpectedly emotional.

‘It’s something to see that shy boy from the beginning bring all the firepower in that scene. I was moved to tears by how magnificent and powerful he was,’ he said.

Zendaya was later asked about portraying Chani, a member of the Fremen and Atreides’ romantic interest, in the upcoming sequel.

The 27-year-old actress praised Villeneuve for providing a greater focus on her character and giving her more authority to challenge Atreides’ motivations.

‘Something that I really appreciated about what Denis did with Chani is that he does give her her own convictions and heart. In the book, she kind of immediately acquiesces to the fact that he’s the messiah and she never questions it,’ she said.

Pugh is set to portray Princess Irulan, the daughter of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and Dune’s effective narrator, in the upcoming feature.

The Oppenheimer actress told the media outlet that she was enthusiastic about being able to play a character who deviated from her usual type.

‘The characters that I’ve chosen in the past are usually unbelievably vocal, very loud and opinionated. I think this might be one of the quietest characters I’ve ever played,’ she said.

Butler will play Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who was originally portrayed by Sting in the David Lynch-directed 1984 adaptation of the novel.

The Elvis star also spoke about the harsh shooting conditions that the feature’s team endured, which served to bring everyone closer while working on the movie.

‘It really bonds the entire crew. There’s something so humbling about being in such an uncomfortable environment,’ he said.

Villeneuve later discussed the sandworm-riding scenes set to be featured in Dune: Part Two, which were not as fleshed out in Herbert’s novel as he would have liked.

The filmmaker expressed that he wanted to hold the scenes to a certain standard, which ended up becoming a particularly difficult endeavor.

‘It was technically very intense because I wanted a level of realism that has not been seen before…That was by far the most complex sequence I have ever done in my life,’ he recalled.

Villeneuve then stated that he was pleased by the work that went into the scenes and that he was enthusiastic about the prospect of sharing them with the public.

‘Every time I see the scene, I’m sincerely moved because it has exactly the visual qualities I was looking for. I wanted it to feel so real, so edgy, and so dangerous,’ he stated.

Dune: Part Two is currently scheduled to be released to the public on March 1.
